Moroccan Red Wool Tribal Animal Rug L8
Moroccan Red Wool Tribal Animal Rug L8
This is a rare and unusual example of the skill and primitive style of rug woven in the Atlas Mountains of the Azilal region of Morocco. Woven almost exclusively by female peasant weavers, these rugs are methods of storytelling, with both abstract and pictographic tribal signs of their ancestors to express motherhood, childbirth, and daily rural life. It is very uncommon to find representative figures in a rug of this type, and also with such a rich density of color. A pack animal, probably a donkey, is depicted with a blanket over its back, appearing to traverse over a mountain, alongside other tribal motifs and what appear to be nomadic tents typical of the region. Truly an amazing, stunning piece. Wonderful also as a wall hanging.
Excellent condition. However, as with most antique and vintage items, slight imperfections are inherent and wear is consistent with age.
Dimensions: 6'11" x 4'1", not including fringe.
